Stepping Up: Enhancing Postoperative Ambulation Practices and Documentation in Surgical Care

Background: “Postoperative care often suffers from misconceptions about early mobilization, leading to inconsistent practices and missed opportunities for optimal recovery (Alexander et al., 2023). Research has shown that early mobilization within 24 to 48 hours post-surgery significantly reduces pain, anxiety, and length of hospital stay, yet barriers such as limited staff education and poor documentation persist (Simsek Yaban et al., 2023; Tazreean et al., 2022). Nurses and certified nursing technicians are key drivers in promoting early ambulation, but their impact is diminished without structured training and standardized workflows (Aprisunadi et al., 2023).”

Purpose: “To enhance the timely mobilization of Emory Johns Creek Hospital 4 Surgical postoperative patients within 24 to 48 hours after surgery by increasing staff competency in early ambulation practices and strengthening documentation standards within the electronic medical record (EMR).”

Goal: “To increase the frequency and accuracy of postoperative mobility documentation by 25% among nursing staff and certified nursing technicians on 4 surgical unit by May 30,2025.”
